"It was a little bit hairy first of all," he said. "Brentford had a couple of half-chances but as the game went on we were more solid and scored three good goals."In the last 20 minutes we ran the game."

Johnson also gave his full support to Jevons, who started at Griffin Park after being omitted from the side last Saturday.

"He had never been out of the squad," said Johnson. "He can score goals, I never doubted that and he showed he is a good finisher."

Brentford boss Terry Butcher blamed basic errors for his side's defeat but was pleased with some of the football they played.

"We played well for an hour and haven't scored," he said. "We created chances but we have to be harder to beat.

"It was a harsh lesson and we all learned from it. If you give the ball away too quickly you will get punished."
