"The chairman is talking to Basso and he knows my views on it," Johnson told the club's official website.
"We just need to go a bit softly-softly on it. The last time we said we're speaking to him there was a big headline in the paper that he'd climbed down. That disappointed the player and it set him back a month or two.
"As we said, when we need him we would play him because he's still under contract and he gave his all when he needed to at Swansea.
"We'll have to wait and see how the situation develops."
