"It was a bit of retaliation but the sending-off was quite right. He did actually win the free-kick from which we scored the second goal.

"Elliot is a competitive lad. He has been a bit frustrated because he has been injured for some of the time here. But young lads have got to learn that they cannot retaliate."

Overall the City boss is happy with how things have gone.

"It was a fantastic tour," said Johnson. "We have played three competitive games and you have to remember that the Latvian teams are a third into their season.

"It has also been good that we can get the players together. What we have crammed into a week would normally take three times as long if we were back home.

"We done a lot of talking and training - both mental and physical.

"We have had a terrific grounding, and when we get back we will be into the normal pre-season. We have also been acclimatising for the weather at the start of the season; it's 35 degrees Celsius over here. That will stand us in good stead."
