Johnson backs Styles over penalty 'error'

DESPITE seeing his team denied what looked like a clear penalty last night, City manager Gary Johnson has refused to place any blame on referee Rob Styles for failing to make a decision.

City toiled once more at Ashton Gate as they stumbled to a second consecutive 0-0 draw against Yorkshire opponents and although he admitted he felt that his side should have been given a penalty which Ugo Ehiogu handled, Gary Johnson refused to be overly-critical of the referees performance,

"Stern was adamant it was a penalty and he was closest to the incident. But my only complaints about referees are made under my breath," the City manager told Sporting Life.

Styles was involved in a controversial penalty decision last week that saw him 'relegated' to fourth official duty in the Premiership but allowed him to referee a Championship level game last night. The City boss said he feels it is 'unfair' on teams in his division to only get high profile referees when they 'make a mistake' but said that he would not have given a penalty unless he was sure.

He told the Bristol Evening Post: "That (his relegation) could have been on his mind when the incident occured," Johnson said,

"I never have a go at referees, but perhaps he needed to be 200 per cent sure it was a penalty. I was too far away (to see it), but Stern's an honest lad and he feels it should have been a penalty."
