IN these days of banks merging, credit crunches and bailouts, even football clubs are being forced to watch the pennies.

If the climate of losses and having to budget sensibly continues then unless a club has a mega-rich owner, football will become increasingly about a coaches ability to nurture young talent which is coming through English academies on a regular basis but is often ignored.

As a manager who has been backed by the financial support of his chairman where necessary but also dealt, moulded and coached the players with whom he was blessed then who better than Gary Johnson to speak at the opening of the Association of Football Coaches which will be unveiled at Bristol City's newly refurbished training ground on Sunday with the intention of looking after the interests of coaches all around the country.

"As well as trying to develop the skill and technique of players, all the games and practices we will offer to members are designed to be fun and to give variety to training," said Johnson who will be at the opening next week.

The centre is designed to help the coaches and teachers of today produce the players and teams of tomorrow,

"If young players enjoy training they will want to come back for more.

"There is nothing like this in the football industry at the moment and it provides a wonderful opportunity for all coaches at all levels."
