BRISTOL City boss Gary Johnson missed out on the first monthly award of the season, despite an unbeaten start to the Robins second campaign in the Championship.

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy picked up the first Championship manager of the month award thanks to his table topping sides excellent early season form. Alan Irvine and Alex McLeish were also nominated for the award but the former Republic of Ireland manager got the nod.

McCarthy's side were heled to a 2-2 draw in their first game at Plymouth but thrashed Sheffield Wednesday 4-1 and Forest 5-1 in their next two home matches. The Yorkshire-man spoke to Sky Sports News after hearing he had recieved the award. He said: "Last season we dominated games but didn't win them. We've started scoring goals and that is the most pleasing aspect.

"We've had a good start and had some convincing wins.

"We're not getting carried away but it's nice to be top of the league with a two-week break.

"It is difficult to assess the squad. It is a young team but they have got experience as well and they are a little bit wiser than they were last season."
