SPEAKING about his delight at gaining a first league win of the season at Ashton Gate and a first in three in all competitions, City manager Gary Johnson hailed the impact of several of his players.

The City boss spoke yesterday about the performance of Marvin Elliott who returned from injury to play a half in Saturday's victory and after the game the manager praised Ivan Sproule for the way he ran the midfield throughout the second half.

Michael McIndoe's two goals ensured he was also part of the Johnson 'love-in' and today Gary turned his attentions to Nicky Maynard who added to his goal against derby with another predatory strike against Doncaster.

The £2.25m striker has prehaps not hit the heights City fans expected him to after a hat trick on his debut against Royal Antwerp but coming up from League One, Johnson believes Maynard is still 'learning' at this level. He told teamtalk.com.

"He's a young lad and that can only do him the world of good."

Johnson also revealed how he had a few stern words for Maynard after the defeat to Birmingham which he believed stirred him up on Saturday,

"It's good to get our first home league win of the season and I'm delighted for Nicky Maynard because I gave him a bit of a rocket after our defeat by Birmingham in midweek.

"His response was to score one goal and make another so he had a real effect on the game."
