Johnson pleased with squad depth

ONE swallow certainly doesn't make a summer but it seems as if one impressive win in the Championship has raised confidence around Ashton Gate.

An impressive performance in their game against Doncaster at the weekend seems to have given Gary Johnson's side plenty of much needed confidence as they 'face-off' against leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers this Saturday.

The lunchtime kick-off will be a real measure of City's ability to challenge for a play-off position this season as relatively inconsistent form has led to them currently placed four places behind Wolves.

Wolves's only blip in a relatively faultless start to the campaign came at home to Plymouth on the opening day of the season, while good form away from Ashton Gate has helped City keep their position inside the top six.

Ivan Sproule spoke yesterday about his side's determination to get three points and now manager Gary Johnson has declared himself delighted with the strength in depth he has in his squad.

Key players Marvin Elliott, Adriano Basso, Steve Brooker and Brian Wilson could all return to the City team this weekend and the City manager is pleased that he is beginning to be 'spoilt for choice' when it comes to selecting his starting XI.

He told teamtalk.com: "It is vitally important to have that level of competition. You need players competing with one another all over the park in the Championship, and that is what we now have.

"Players have to know that if they play poorly and the team loses, then there are others who can come in and do a job. That is what has happened so far this season.

"Ivan Sproule couldn't get in because Brian Wilson was keeping him out at the start of the season. Gavin Williams is also in there fighting for a place and he was disappointed to be left out against Doncaster.

"Cole Skuse has done well in midfield and he looks okay when we move him to right-back. Although Marvin Elliott might not be ready for 90 minutes yet, he is also fit again and showing us what he can do."
