Johnson tells strikers to 'step up'

AS City lost yet more points at home against Sheffield United last night, Ashton Gate boss had a simple message for his strikers 'take your chance, and i'll pick you'.

Gary Johnson has now seen his side draw two games in a row after a 0-0 stalemate with Sheffield United last night, and their Yorkshire rivals Barnsley who City also drew 0-0 with on Saturday.

City had won an encouraging three in a row to place themselves in 6th place in the Championship, but another Ashton Gate slip up saw the Robins slide to 8th, just ahead of Plymouth.

Although he is undoutbtedly pleased that City seem to have put their 3-0 reverse against Sheffield United behind them, sources suggest that the Ashton Gate supremo is still struggling to find the right front pairing to put City back in title contention.

Last year Dele Adebola, Michael McIndoe and Lee Trundle all weighed in with crucial goals but this term Adebola has only one goal to his name, winger McIndoe has two and Lee Trundle has yet to score after struggling to break into the team. Compaired with 2007/08 Gary Johnson has added three strikers, Nicky Maynard, John Akinde and last week Stern John.

While the experienced Trinidad striker has expressed his wish to extend his loan deal past Christmas and vowed to show 'what he is capable' of, Maynard and Akinde are still new to the Championship and with three goals between them, the City boss has called on the attacking elements in his team to begin scoring goals on a regular basis.

Leaders Wolves are finding goals from Chris Iwelumo and Sylvain Ebanks Blake whilst Birmingham's attacking talents are unquestionable when Alex McLeish can afford to leave James McFadden on the bench. Despite awknowlding that those around him have 'an embarassment of riches' Johnson challenged his strikers. He told teamtalk,

"It's four clean sheets in a row for us now which is pleasing, but we need to start scoring a few more.

"I have a lot of strikers to chose from and the ones who start finding the back of the net will be in the team."
