Martinez pours cold water on Trundle link

SWANSEA City boss Roberto Martinez has told supporters that he believes Lee Trundle is 'very unlikely' to play for the club again.

The City striker is seen as a cult figure at the Liberty Stadium after years of service to the club and was recently linked with a short-term move back to the club in a bid to game first team football.

Gary Johnson rejected speculation before the transfer window closed that Trundle would be allowed to join the Swans encouraging the player to 'fight for his place'. Unofficial reports seem to suggest that the 31-year-old striker is not happy with his current squad status with City and that the signings of Nicky Maynard and this week John Akinde have unsettled him further, both of which had left him pining for a home to his former club.

City's Championship rivals have started their first season back at this level well and although Martinez admits it is flattering to hear his former player say 'nice' things about the club but feels that Trundle made a 'choice' to leave. He told the Swansea Evening Post: "Lee had to make a decision last year and it was a difficult time for us. The players who were still here at the time had to react and now they have taken the club forward."

The Swansea manager was refering to the situation last season when he fought to keep Trundle at the club, on the eve of the campaign beginning but Trundle handed in a transfer request and eventually joined City in a £1million deal. Martinez was extremely proud of the way his club were able to put the sale of their star player behind them and storm their way to win League One in the wake of Trundle leaving.

Martinez continued: "It's always nice when former players have nice things to say about their old club. First it confirms that a little big of what we have said before that we can take for granted what we have got at Swansea. And second it shows the human side of Lee Trundle.

"He has been a special player for this club and he will always be a special person in everyone's hearts. But he had to make a decision, with the right or wrong advice, and we had to move on."
