Maynard eyes pre-Christmas return

"I've always said I'll be back before Christmas and the way things are going I'm way on schedule for that," Maynard told BBC Radio Bristol.

"Hopefully in a few weeks time I can get a reserve game under my belt."

Bristol City have struggled at times to find the back of the net in the absence of Maynard with Jon Stead being their current leading goal scorer with five.

But the former Crewe man is confident he will finish on top again despite missing almost half the season.

When I do make my first appearance I will be on point and I do expect to be the club's leading goal scorer at the end of the season

"I do expect to get double figures, I'll be disappointed if I don't," he said.

"When I do make my first appearance I will be on point and I do expect to be the club's leading goal scorer at the end of the season."

Maynard has experienced a long spell on the sidelines before when he broke his leg at Crewe and says he learnt a lot from that experience.

"I've got no doubts that I'll come back as good if not better," he said.

"I was a bit weaker around the knee areas anyway so just doing the extra work in the gym can help me in the long run which is a bonus."

And the fact that England manager Fabio Capello has selected striker Jay Bothroyd from City's rivals Cardiff has not gone unnoticed.

"I'm pleased that the Championship is getting looked at," added Maynard.

"And I'm sure that anyone that in the Championship that has belief that they can get to England level, that's given them extra incentive to do well and get noticed."

But the Cheshire-born man played down his own chances of getting selected in the near future.

"It's not unrealistic but my main priority is to get back to the way I was," he said.

"It's not going to be easy to get back into the Bristol City line-up and that's my main priority, not getting into the England squad."

Meanwhile the club have announced they have sent Irish duo Jimmy Keohane and Patrick Hoban on loan to non-league Clevedon Town for a month.

Both players were signed on year-long deals by former City boss Steve Coppell back in the summer.
