BIRMINGHAM City boss Alex McLeish paid tribute to Bristol City as his side eased to a 2-1 victory at Ashton Gate.

The side relegated from the top flight last season enjoyed a helping hand, from Louis Carey who diverted into his own goal to put his side 1-0 down. The home side could have little complaint as they went 2-0 down to a goal from Cameron Jerome and only managed to fight their way back into the game late on through Lee Trundle, who scored from 45-yards after a bad kick from Maik Taylor.

Despite coming away with the victory, McLeish side it was not easy, he told the Birmingham Mail: "We came to a very tough place and Premier League teams would struggle at Ashton Gate I'm sure.

"I think my players will gain great confidence from a fine away victory."
