Watford 1 Bristol City 2.... first thoughts

City played a controlled game and that ultimately won them the game. It will be seen as a Gary Johnson master stroke, bringing on Darren Byfield to score the winner, but the team effort was worthy of the win.

Ivan Sproule missed two glorious opportunities, when one on one with the keeper, but Poom made good saves on both occasions as Sproule over-ran the ball. In a first half dominated by Bristol City, they had seven corners to Watfords none. Watford hit the post with a cross come shot but apart from that their front two didn't see much of the ball with Marlon King a disappointment.

Watford had by far the better of the second half and had a good shout for a penalty as Jamie McCombe handled in the box. City were to see a similar shout turned away at the other end later in the game. Marlon King had the most chances for Watford but his finishing was wasteful, out of seven attempts only two were on target.

City opened the scoring when an excellent cross from deep by defender Liam Fontaine found Enoch Showunmi completely unmarked to head down and past the excellent Poom in the Watford goal. Watford pressed and pressed for an equaliser and seemingly got their reward when Basso weak punch under pressure was headed back across goal for O'Toole to nod home his first senior goal at the age of nineteen.

Although there was just four minutes left neither team seemed to want to settle for a point and it was City who were going to get the break. Good trickery on the left by Trundle saw his cross only half dealt with by Poom and the ball reached Cole Skuse on the right who found Byfield unmarked in the middle to finish neatly. Only thirty seconds remained of four minutes of injury time but there was still time for a scare at the other end however Marlon King again blazed over when well placed. The referee blew his whistle as Basso took the resulting goal kick.

Maybe a draw would have been fairer, but I feel that many neutrals will have been impressed with City's style of play. What a huge win for the Dog & Duck.
