BRISTOL City's young defender James Wilson admits he was 'shocked' and 'surprised' to play a part in City's 1-0 win against Southampton on Saturday.

Wilson, who spent the first two months of the season on loan at Brentford, was part of the City squad which travelled to the south coast on saturday and was brought on by Gary Johnson with 10 minutes to go.

Johnson spoke of his 'high hopes' for Wilson and indicated that he may be used as part of the first team squad to cover for injuries by refusing to let him rejoin the Bees for another month.

Wilson told the official website last week that he 'did not expect' to be part of the first team squad but wanted to 'give it a go for a few months' and he admitted his delight at being given a chance at the first time of asking,

"It came completely out of the blue," he told the Bristol Evening Post,

I only found out I was in the squad when the gaffer told me after training on Friday. At first, I was so surprised, I couldn't believe it. But then it began to sink in and I was really nervous and excited."

The 19-year-old will be in contention for this weekend's visit of Forest with Jamie McAllister, Louis Carey and Andy Webster all struggling with injury.
