CHAMPIONSHIP leaders Wolves have confirmed they plan to contest the red card shown to striker Chris Iwelumo during their 3-1 win against Preston on Saturday.

The Scottish striker scored a hat trick for Wolves on Saturday but ended a bitter-sweet day off the field when red carded for a tangle with opponent Sean St Ledger. The Wolves man appeared to be kicked by the Preston defender and after a face-to-face confrontation both players landed on the group in a heap. Iwelumo was seen as the agressor however and was dismissed for his part in the confrontation.

In a post-match interview the forward protested his innocence and Mick McCarthy also said that St Ledger had agreed to back the club's appeal if necessary.

The straight red would mean a ban for the next three games, starting at Molynuex against City on Saturday but the striker could now recieve a reprieve. McCarthy told the bbc: "I'd like to think the right thing will be done and it'll be rescinded.

"If you're looking for a witness to support you, it's the guy who's just had the run around, who's had a hat-trick scored against him, but then comes in and says you've done nothing wrong."

The Wolves manager told the media that he will not be appealing against the red card of Wayne Hennessey who was sent off with just minutes to play but will wait to see the referees report before deciding to appeal against his own dismisal.
