Jamie Smith rescued a point for Bristol City with a goal in the third minute of time added on for stoppages.

Smith, signed on a free transfer from Crystal Palace, took a pass from Leroy Lita before beating Neil Moss with a left-foot shot which went in off a post.

Bournemouth had only themselves to blame for failing to complete their first win of the season, but were left to regret a host of missed chances.

Derek Holmes, Eddie Howe and Marcus Browning were all denied by smart goal keeping from Steve Phillips.

Smith almost turned the ball into his own net after three minutes, his intended clearance from a centre by Wade Elliott going narrowly wide with Philips beaten.

It was no surprise when Bournemouth took the lead in the 37th minute when Brian Stock crossed from the right and Welsh International Carl Fletcher scored with a downward header which Smith was unable to clear from the line.

Bristol City almost equalized a minute later when Bradley Orr saw 25 yard shot pushed onto a post by goalkeeper Moss.

Bristol City equalized in the 77th minute when pacey Lita caught defender Neil Young in possession and raced clear to beat Moss from eight yards.

Bournemouth went into the lead again with two minutes of normal time remaining. Elliott got clear down the right and centred for James Hayter to head in from close range.

City had Tom Doherty and Danny Coles booked for dissent after manager Brian Tinnion had made a double substitution at half-time.

Tinnion sent on Lee Miller in place of major new signing Paul Heffernan and Stephen Gillespie in place of Joe Anyinsah in a bid to pep up the Bristol City attack.

Even then it needed Smith's late intervention to enable City's travelling fans to go home with something to cheer.
