Tranmere Rovers eased their relegation fears as they achieved their ninth home victory at the expense of promotion-chasing Bristol City.

The visitors could have few complaints, Tranmere totally dominated the proceedings.

They were twice denied by the crossbar before Eugene Dadi powered home a header from a Mickey Mellon corner in the 82nd minute for his 14th goal of the season.

City keeper Steve Phillips earned his money with two excellent early saves from Dadi and Gary Jones.

Iain Hume was always in the thick of the action for Rovers, but he missed one good first-half opportunity, before twice going close after half-time.

Lee Miller got in City's best first-half effort with a header which was well saved by John Achterberg.

Danny Coles saw a shot deflected for a corner in the 53rd minute.

Graham Allen first hit the crossbar with a header from a Mellon free-kick in the 59th minute and again the woodwork denied him on 78 minutes from a Mellon corner.

It was a sixth away reverse for City and on the night they could have few complaints.

Skipper Matthew Hill tried hard enough for the Robins but on the night they seemed to lack enthusiasm and certainly there was bite lacking in attack.

After the game boss Danny Wilson had the players locked in the dressing room for a heart to heart discussion.

Tranmere boss Brian Little was much happier: "Our attitude was spot on. I could not have asked for more and we now have a nice gap over the bottom four in the division.

"The lads worked hard and deserved the victory. It was a strange set-up for us with several players missing through suspension, but we quickly felt at home and put a lot of pressure on a good side.

"In recent weeks we have not performed as well as we should but we were very much back to the standards I expect."
