Leroy Lita came back to form with a vengeance after a run of four matches without a goal to hand Bristol city a last gasp 2-1 victory at Walsall.

The Congolese striker fired home two second half goals after Walsall had taken a 49th minute lead with Matt Fryatt firing the ball under keeper Steve Phillips from the penalty spot having being brought down by Tony Bulter, who was booked for his trouble.

But City never gave up in a thrilling match which saw both sides play some exciting attacking football.

Within the first nine minutes City duo Gary Birch and Lita both had goals disallowed for offside and the tone was set for an end to end battle in driving wind which made the conditions difficult.

Paul Merson had two good chances to put the hosts in front despite being closely marked throughout by Tom Doherty.

However the Walsall player-manager fired wide with a 30th minute effort and then be denied by Phillips 10 minutes later after the City keeper's mistake presented him with a scoring opportunity.

In between Walsall keeper Joe Murphy tipped over from City's best player of the afternoon Scott Murray.

Walsall seemed to have the upper hand after going ahead through Fryatt's spot-kick early in the second half, but the visitors still kept pushing forward at every opportunity and were rewarded in the 64th minute when Lita seized on a misdirected pass by Simon Osborne.

His first shot was saved by Murphy, but Murray drove the ball back in to the goalmouth and Lita snapped up the rebound to grab his 10th goal of the season from six yards.

Both sides went for the winner but, when a Walsall attack broke down in stoppage time, City burst clear again with speed and Steven Brooker set up the chance for his fellow striker Lita to hammer home an angled drive from 25 yards which Murphy should really have saved.

Even then Walsall could have got a point but Michael Standing drove wide from a good chance set up by Merson.
