CITY 1 Torquay Utd 1

Their penalty; Doherty played the ball, the forward (Adebayo Akinfenwa) was on the other side of the ball and fell over it. I used to think that was a fair challenge. Now I just don't know. Anyinsah broke about three similar challenges before going down. Nothing given. There was also a shout for handball. We should have had them though. They weren't the best side we will face.

At the start of the second half they looked quite sharp. Exploiting a lot of space that we left at the back. Phillips made two very good saves; one when he tipped over a header, and the other when he parried from a player clean through and the rebound bounced over a Torquay head. Our goal was superb, Danny Coles' cross from deep, met very well by Leroy Lita to power home.

The problem as I see it; We are too light weight (or light height?) up front. The front three do not link up well at the moment with the midfield. At least one needs to come deep to pick the ball up and hold on to it, but we didn't seem sure who that should be. Similarly the midfield three should have a link player to take the ball forward. There seemed huge gaps to me between defence and midfield and/or midfield and attack.

We were hit on the counter attack because at times, when we had already committed all of the midfield forward, there was no width so Jamie Smith and Craig Woodman would join in too. This left just Coles and Hill at the back and often three or four against those two when we are hit on the break. Smith and Woodman (sounds like a gun?) want to get forward so I feel we should give the 3-5-2 a try again. This would give us the width we need whilst releasing the three in midfield to push forward in attack or drop off in defence. We will get there but is too much time needed? Perhaps we do need a target man? Perhaps we should have brought on Lee Miller?

Overall I am not too disappointed with this wake up call, it was much needed. Shock results for me Wrexham 2 Swindlers 1, and Wednesday 0 Colchester 3 (all in the last 5 mins!).

WELL PLAYED TORQUAY YOU DID A GOOD JOB ON US!!
