"The gaffer told me the other day that if I score 20 goals in pre-season he will stick me in from the start against Torquay United.

"I suppose that's two and 18 to go," he added with a smile. "These pre-season games are crucial for me, I want to stand out and show the gaffer what I can do."

It may seem like the young scouser is "aving a laff" but he scored two on Saturday and could have had four or five.

"I was pleased to see the ball hit the back of the net but I could have had a few more goals really. For the first I just picked the ball up on the edge of the box, turned and it crept in off the post", he admitted.

"The second was an easy move really. Lee Miller went short, I went long. Woody played a great ball over the top for me and as I had seen the keeper off his line I just lobbed it over him. The ball sat up nicely for me."

Evidence of his eye for goal was shown to everyone connected to the club when he scored seven goals for the reserves in three trial games before signing at the end of last season. So nine goals from three and a half representative games and still hungry for more.

"I want to take this opportunity in pre-season to impress the staff and I also need to get used to playing alongside the other players."

He is certainly doing that, and he is certainly one to watch out for next season.
