Johnson confirms battle for Akinde signing

BRISTOL City may not yet officially have announced the signing of John Akinde but Gary Johnson admits that he faced a battle to sign the talented striker.

Akinde is expected to complete a deal signing for City from Ebbsfleet United for a fee of around £150,000 and has been described by Johnson as 'one of the best prospects' in the Blue Square Premiership.

The City boss was keen to add a fifth striker to his squad and believes that Akinde will provide his team with a perfect balance though he accepts that it was a difficult choice for the striker. He told the Bristol Evening Post: "John was being persued by a lot of League clubs, but I've known about him for a while.

"I know Liam and his assistant Alan Kimble very well and they told me about John some months ago. They told me right from the off to keep an eye on him because he was going to be something special."

It could be a while before Akinde appears in a City shirt as Johnson said yesterday that the player had not completed a full pre season and is probably likely to spend some time in the reserves before he makes his first team debut. With a goal scoring record at Conference level of a goal every 2.4 games he is likely to provide City with a necessary extra option.

Johnson said: "We weren't the only club interested in him, there was a lot of competition which is credit to the player.

"In the end he's come here, liked what he's seen and decided to join Bristol City. He wanted to sign for us from the moment he arrived here and this is where he wants to be."
