City manager Gary Johnson once described Schmidt as his 'best ever signing' at Huish Park.
"Gary was keen to bring him in since he arrived, but Glen wanted to make sure he supported Steve Thompson," chairman Steve Lansdown told BBC Radio Bristol.
"He's joining us at the beginning of the season and it's good news because it's important to have the right team off the pitch as well as on it."
